Women Hit Hardest: Fight Financial Ruin From Autism Therapy Costs

After Shocking Diagnosis -Shocking Bills: Autism Therapy Costs Time and Money

Many women giving up careers to care for autistic children. Autism therapy provides excessive burdens on families.

Parents recieving news that their beloved child has autism syndrome disorders are often shocked and saddenned. Wanting the best for the child they seek therapy and are often equally shocked at the costs involved. On top of that the taxing of time to care for autistic children can be crippling.

Autism Therapy Mothers DevotionMany times one of the parents of an autistic child is forced to give up a career in order to tend to the child. This can further increase the financial burden on the parents. Lack of adequate insurance coverage can be another brick that falls from the sky and hits them on the head.

Laura McKenna a former political science professor writes in a guest blog on The Atlantic about how financial burdens afect women and society as a whole.

A recent study looked at cost of autism on families. The research was conducted by David Mandell, associate director of the Center for Autism Research at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and associate director of the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia.

Mandell found that mothers of children with autism earned, on average, less than $21,000 a year. That was 56 percent less than mothers whose children had no health limitations and 35 percent less than mothers whose children had other health limitations.

All this work makes a real difference for the child. A study coming from Columbia found that kids who outgrew many of their autistic characteristics received early, intensive therapy, which was facilitated by parents with more education and financial wherewithal.

As the reported cases of autism have soared in recent years, so have the overall costs. Some estimate that autism costs society $137 billion per year. And nobody wants to pick up that big tab. Autism falls into a black hole between medical and educational services. Insurance companies expect schools to pay, and schools want the insurance companies to pay.

The costs of autism therapy can be overwhelming. Read more on the report at the Atlantic. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/05/the-economic-impact-of-autism-on-families/257892/

The costs of not doing anything to help the autistic population of society would be even worse. Many mothers are making a terrific sacrifice in giving up careers to help thier autistic children grow to be able to have a career themselves.

If these self sacrificing souls didn’t act our society would become overburdened with minds that are not functioning to optimum levels because nobody wanted to pay for or sacrifice the time to treat the autistic mind. Please share this post to show support for those who sacrifice their time. Be they a mother or of some other relationship. Leave a comment as a word of support too if you can.
