Thanks to the recent ruling of a Miami federal judge, Tampa autism therapy services for autistic children got a big boost. His findings were that children afflicted with autism syndrome disorder were being subject to the risk of iffeversible harm when health care regulators refused to pay for critical therapys.

The state of Florida has a law in act at present that mandates  commercial carriers provide coverage for Autism therapy and the therapy for it’s related disorders.  The most succesful therapy , also referred to as ABA, is readily available toto Floridians with their own private insurance — what this means though is that the children who are part of  poor families are denied much needed services that were easily accesible to family with higher incomes.

The ruling leaves Florida’s Medicaid responsible for the bills of needy families as reported in the Tampa Bay Times by Carol Marbin Miller of the Miami Herald. It means that they are to begin funding therapy necesssary for the development of autistic children. These types of therapy may include speech, behavior, language and cognitive development.

In a blistering order, Lenard called “outrageous” the state Agency for Health Care Administration’s position that behavioral therapy is an experimental treatment that is not widely accepted by experts in the field.
“It is imperative,” the judge wrote, “that autistic children in Florida receive (behavioral therapy) immediately to prevent irreversible harm to these children’s health and development.”

The ruling by the Federal Judge affects only the clinics in Florida, but proponents of the bill expect that shortly other states will be following up. There are still many states that do not mandate insurance coverage for autism disorders.

Locally, Tampa autism therapy services and businesses will see an increase in patient services. Behavioral Consulting got a boost in revenue after a law was passed by the Florida legislature in 2006 as was reported in a recent story posted on the Tampa Bay Business Journal by Chris Wilkerson.

The story relates how Kelly Prince, of Behavioral Consulting, a local Tampa autism therapy provider has benefited by laws providing coverage for those afflicted with this unpredictable disorder.

Awareness of disorders along the autism spectrum has increased significantly during the past several years, creating a rise in diagnoses, changes in health care legislation and growth at a Tampa Bay company.

The number of children diagnosed with autism-related disorders is up sharply during the past several years — a 23 percent increase since 2006. Revenue at Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay has gone up sharply since then, too, but Kelley Prince, president, hesitates to link the two.

The turning point for Behavioral Consulting came in 2008 when the Florida Legislature passed a bill that requires insurance carriers…

This is all good news for Autism therapy centers, parents and the public in general. There are no pills or overnight cures for Autism and it’s related disorder. Therapies are expensive because of the training involved to administer the therapy.

Tampa autism therapy centers will now be able to assist children whose parents are not independently wealthy or sufficiently covered by health insurance.

Do you agree that footing the bill of the under-insured is cheaper in the long run than paying for the consequenses of ignoring the health of those who have no access to health care?
