Breaking News: Brain Scan Helps Diagnose Autism

Researchers Diagnose Autism With Special Brain Scans

Using special imaging Doctors are now able to detect and diagnose autism much sooner than before.

According to the breaking report from Denise Dador on the ABCLocal.com site there is now a special type of MRI that follows water through the brain tissue. Its called diffusion tensor imaging.

This type of brain scan was used by doctors to  enable researchers a veiw of the brains in babies who have a sibling with autism. Scientists were able to measure 15 connections in the brains and found many indications that help them diagnose autism in babies earlier than ever.

“The children who went on to have autism, we can see differences as early as six months, and that over time, their brains changed less,” said Dr. Jason Wolff, author of the study at University of North Carolina School of Medicine.

Currently it’s almost impossible to diagnose autism at six months. These scans could offer a way to catch it much earlier.

“This is before we can really pick up any differences behaviorally,” said Wolff. “If we could go earlier and earlier with our interventions, we could prevent autism from fully manifesting.”

Wolff says the imaging could one day be used with behavioral exams to better diagnose autism. A recent study found when children as young as 18 months underwent therapy for autism, their IQ improved 14 points compared to other kids with autism.

We share the enthusiasm for the research done by the scientists. Since a baby with a sibling afflicted with autism has a 1 in 5 chance of also developing autism it would be highly adviseable to be extra vigilant to determine if autism was causing any developmental delays.

This type of technology helps diagnose autism in siblings and shows great promise for using brain scans to help increase the diagnosis of autism earlier in every child.
